The Region of Karlovy Vary is situated in western Bohemia, Czech Republic.The area of the region is 3,314 km2, which is 4.25% of the total area of the Czech Republic. 43.1 % of the regional area is covered by forests. Karlovarsky region is rich in mineral springs of various temperatures,flavour and curative effects but also in natural mineral waters, of which Mattoni is the most well known. Within the region, there is not only the best known spa town in the country – Karlovy Vary - but also Marianske Lazne, Frantiskovy Lazne, Lazne Kynzvart and Jachymov. In Marianske Lazne, there are 40 springs and the springs' temperature is between 7 - 10 C. All of the springs have special characteristics. For example, the Mary's spring is used in gas form and it is very efficient for cardiac diseases. Jachymov is the only radon spa in the Czech Republic and its waters have the highest healing radon activity per litre in the whole world. Within the context of the spa industry, there are the well known spa wafers, which are adored by the locals as a sweet delicacy and particularly by spa guests from all corners of the world.

History

According to legend, one of the first patients In historically most famous town of the region was the Roman Emperor and Bohemian King Charles lV. Archeological findings, however, evidence that the beneficial effects of the local springs had been known to the local inhibitants long before. Nevertheless, a new period began with Emperor´s approval. Physicians became interested in the springs  and their research confirmed the beneficial effects of drinking and bath cures.For as long as people can remember, special drinking cups have been used to drink Karlovy Vary water. These were and remain the property of each spa guest. Many drinking cups have been preserved as historical proof documenting the evolution of the spa treatment.

Karlovy Vary -Carlsbad is a spa city situated in western Bohemia, approximately 130 km (81 mi) west of Prague.It is named after King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, who founded the city in 1370. It is historically famous for its hot springs (13 main springs, about 300 smaller springs, and the warm-water Teplá River). It is the most visited spa town in Czech Republic. On 14 August 1370, Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor, gave city privileges to the place that subsequently was named after him, according to legend after he had acclaimed the healing power of the hot springs. Town is also known for The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival held annually in July. It gained worldwide recognition over the past years and has become one of Europe's major film events.Karlovy Vary was also made famous due to the Becher herbal liquor, the artworks created by the glassmakers from the Moser company and Thun porcelain.

Nature

In the Karlovy Vary Region there is the most exceptional concentration of spa resorts in the CR. Of the 79 different springs , 13 are used for drinking. Mineral waters are similar in what they consists of  but for different temperatures and carbon dioxide content have different effects. The colder springs usually have a slightly laxative effect, warmer springs have a suppressing effect , slowing down the secretion of bile and gastric juices.The temperature of the water is approximately 73 C.
